Hotgoblin Season 5, Round 1

Orange Clockworks 2 – Chuck Norses 1

Well Season 5 has kicked off, and after a seasons break the Chucks are ready and raring to go. The first match of the season was Speed Bowl (read this as timed two minute turns) against the Necromantic “Orange Clockworks” coached by Mark. I was hesitant going into this match as I’d had a killer week at work and couldn’t remember the plan I’d had a season ago for my team…. Mark has done a cracker match report so steal the rest from him. :)

“In the opening match of the season the Orange Clockworks squared up against, those 80′s powerhouses of the Biff, The Chuck Norses. The Norses have returned from retirement to show the OC’s how proper violence is done none of this new fangled ‘Ultra-Violence.” The Orange Clockworks received a sizable inducement and put in the extra training, hired the local Igor and kidnapped a Wizard to help out.

It was a good day for Bloodbowl and the promise of Star power drew in a sizable crowd of 31,000 with majority turning up to see the Leg-Ends of Biff. Alex won the toss and elected to receive the first kick and the game was on.

The first half was a fairly uneventful affair with the Clockworks caging up and making their way up the widezone making a hole in the Norses line by sending multiple players to the KO dugout. The Norses responded in kind but were only able to KO Julian.

Malcom McD managed to break through in towards the end of the first half to run in a Touchdown and get the Clockworks ahead. The Norses then got excited to receive and set up a very aggressive formation. They were favoured with a high kick that allowed them to get a player under the ball and get ready for a good drive. Most of the Norses had been revived by a bit of liniment on their joints and were beginning to warm up.

The Norses hit back with a vengeance, opening up a gap and getting a good attempt on passing play through to try and equalise on the cusp of Half Time. But the throw was not good and the ball scattered away.

The second half began in a very similar way to the last play and the Norses caged up and drove down field to equalise with some good passing plays by “Had to split” Richards. Alex crowd-surfed a Norse into a happy mob who gleefully pummeled him and Antony once again showed the rest of the team how to do it by Seriously Injuring a Norse Runner.

The OC’s again received the Ball and caged up only to be met by the immovable object of the Chuck’s It looked like the game was heading for a draw before Ludvig Vann found a gap to run to the end zone and Malcom McD scooped up the loose ball and threw a beautiful pass to find his mark and get the second Touchdown.

All up it was a great game and Nuffle smiled on Mr. T granting him snake eyes on the skill. Antony was the only player for the Clockworks to improve and has practiced his spot kicking skills.”

At least I scored. Mr.T got the MVP, rolled a double and now has Block. Hopefully he’ll start to turn into a bit of a killing machine….I pity the fool who blocks Mr.T!

Rackham Ogres to Blood Bowl Ogres

To compliment the Halloweenie Snotlings I have been asked to paint up some Rackham Ogres for the Ogre team. At first I was a little hesitant at chopping up these awesome models and was struggling how to Blood Bowl these figures up. I couldn’t really think of any ideas that didn’t involve massive amounts of sculpting rework, so in the end I just went for simple weapon snips.

To paint the skin I used the Games Workshop guide. I started with a base coat of Shadow Grey and then gradually added in Kommando Khaki until the final highlight was pure Kommando Khaki.

The most difficult part of the conversion work was what to do with the Ogre that was holding his weapon in a two handed grip. There wasn’t any easy way to separate the miniatures hands and still have a realistic pose to the Ogre. I was watching a game of Rugby on TV one evening and I noticed how the players passed the ball. This got the cogs turning and using a spare snotling miniature managed to convert the Ogre into throwing a passable snotling rugby pass.

These miniatures were a joy to paint and despite not being very Blood Bowlish look great on the pitch.

Brisbowl II Blood Bowl Tournament Raffle Prize

Well Brisbowl is on again, and once again I’ve put my hand up to paint a team as the raffle prize. This year I don’t have Whooping Cough so the process of getting the team painted has been much easier. The raffle team was originally going to be a Chaos Pact team using models from the Gaspez Arts range. However, hassles getting the models, the pressure of a new job and the fact I just love Elves, made me chose the Wood Elf team from Gaspez Arts.

I wanted to paint the miniatures using very muted, natural tones as I imagine Wood elves would be like in real life. For the skin I started with a basecoat of Citadel Foundation Tallarn Flesh and gave the miniature two thin coats to get an even coverage. I then washed the flesh areas with Citadel Wash Ogryn Flesh. Once dry, the are was highlighted with Tallarn Flesh and a final highlight of 1:1 Tallarn Flesh : Dheneb Stone.

The used a 1:1 Scorched Brown : Camo Green basecoat for the green areas. I then gradually add more Camo Green to this mix for further highlights. I used Rotting Flesh as the final highlight to make the green “pop”. The stripe on the pants and the Wood Elf runes were painted on with Kommando Khaki, followed by Dheneb Stone and the Skull White.

The armour and straps started with a Scorched Brown basecoat followed by Calthan Brown. The highlight was a 1:1 mix of Calthan Brown : Dheneb Stone. The foundation paints not only allow miniatures to be painted quickly, thanks to their excellent coverage, but they are a great range of muted colours as well.

Painting Miniature Miniatures, The Halloweenies from Greebo.

One of the latest commission job I’ve been working is an Ogre team. My client wanted to use the Halloweenies from Greebo as the teams Snotlings. These models have been around for awhile are quite comical and full of character. They were a joy to paint. Combine my enthusiasm for the project and the size of the models these miniature painted up really quick. The only downside to the project being that some of the models are multi-part and were very tricky to put together.

Size Comparison

I’ve included a size comparison pic of a Halloweenie Werewolf compared to a Games Workshop Skaven miniature.

When painting miniatures of this size, or any small areas of detail on a miniature, the highlights need to be a lot sharper than normal to make sure the detail stands out.
